Why Would You Wrestle with a Big Ball of Stress? - Red Things on Tuesday

Published 12 days ago • 5 min read

Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on Tuesday

Hello, Friend!

If you're new to the Tam Integration mailing list, Red Things on Tuesday is a glimpse into our journey. We're continually growing and exploring, just like you. This collection of books, music, teachings, psychedelic ephemera, and the like that we think is meaningful and have been enjoying. It gets sent out on most Tuesdays. The name is based on something a Vedic astrologer told Daniel (me!) once, making this a sadhana . We appreciate you participating in it.

If you're interested in joining one of our integration circles, visit the website here or our Social Link Tree Here.

Why Would You Wrestle With a Big Ball of Stress?

We wrestle with our stressful thoughts all the time, and usually we don't even realize it. The stress tells us stories so compelling that we believe we must dive into them and fight with all our might. We absolutely have to solve the problems circling repetitively through our minds.

When was the last time it actually worked?

It doesn't work for me. I can't think of a time I've solved stress from a place of stress. It just compounds the stress. As Suzuki Roshi said, it's like trying to create a calm lake by throwing rocks at the ripples. We'll never calm our minds through more worry.

What helps is remembering that stress manifests as tension in the body. This makes it simple. Because it goes both ways. Just as mental stress (catastrophizing, perhaps?) creates tension, relaxing the tension miraculously dissipates the stress. And relaxing tension is infinitely easier than solving stress. It's like gold if we take the time to do it.

It's a simple, simple meditation practice. And Simple is good. Suzuki Roshi also reminds us, "Always remain a beginner, this is the secret of zen."

It's also a practice that we'll cover in the "Meditation For the Journey" class that starts next month. Even if you will be joining us for this class, it's never too soon to get started on a practice that can make us more relaxed, present, and able to meet the day's challenges.

To do it, we just sit, breathe, and set the intention to let go of stress. Then, we notice any obvious tension held in the body. We generally don't have to look too hard for it. If you're anything like my sample group, if we mentally repeat 'I am stress-free' a few times, the tension will present itself, ready to be released. It makes perfect sense, based on what we know about the inner healing intelligence.

We breathe and soften and return to being as stress-free as possible, waiting for the next pocket to be revealed.

If we want to get truly tactical, we can practice this both before and after we enter a stressful situation. When we practice it before, we're giving ourselves a chance to have a clear mind and not react to the perceived problems that cause us stress. Maybe we'll be bothered less, or not at all. But even if we are, that's ok. It's a practice.

If we do it again after, we might get a clearer picture of where in the body we hold the tension created by that particular stress. We can start to notice if we hold it there regularly. With this information, we can spend more time softening and strengthening that area. We can pay attention to this area and consciously attempt to keep it soft in future situations.

So that's it. If it seems helpful, give it a shot. Let me know how it works. And please join us for this practice and so many more with me at my 6-week psychedelic meditation intensive starting June 4th.
