Embodying the Rock Star Archetype

I will be speaking on a panel at the Fungi Academy's Sacred Mycology Summit, on Sunday. It's going to be awesome. They sent us a list of questions, and one of them was, "What is unique to your own psychedelic culture?" It gave me pause because I'm not traditional by almost any definition. I grew up going to concerts; my elders wore tie-dye. Sure, more formalized education came later, but as far as my real, true culture, it's not in the jungles of Peru. It lives on a festival green or in a crowded pit. It has liquid lights and lasers. That's enough for me. I'm proud of it.

I asked some of my friends what makes our psychedelic culture unique. One responded easily, confidently, "We're rockstars." I expressed a little doubt, but she wasn't having it, "No, you too. You're a weird, nerdy rock star; I've seen you on the dance floor. You're one of us." It might be one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. My work now is to own it.

We contemplated this archetype. Let its qualities emerge and speak to us. The Rockstar, we decided, consciously engages with music, dance, art, and community, as well as certain molecules with fervent intensity, to heal and grow so they can contribute meaningfully to the increase of joy and celebration worldwide.

The definition is a work in progress. It's good for today.

With the rise of people lying motionless on couches alone in sterile rooms (not that there's anything wrong with that), there is something beautiful about remembering that there are other options that might be more healing for us. Some of us need to sweat our prayers. We might do our best thinking and feeling when we're in motion. A little motion might not even do it. We might need to be dancing as hard as we freaking can. If we're sore the next day or exhausted, that's what it takes. The rock star is willing to make sacrifices. That might mean a day with depleted serotonin or a bank account that feels the sting of expensive ticket purchases. There is an intensity here, a willingness to give it all up for the perfection of the moment. A commitment to lose one's mind in order to come to one's senses.

There is also the family aspect. The band. It's nice to 'belong to the band'. To be able to play with your friends. To play your music in a way that makes theirs sound better. To let their rhythm and melodies lift you up and make you better, too. To push each other to dance even harder and to be even more free. If need be, help ensure we all have tickets to the show and enough water to drink.

I'm pretty sure the rockstar is not limited to a particular type of music. You could rock out to anything. You could rock out to Yo-Yo Ma. I have. Those Bach Cello Suites are Bangers. I saw him play them live at the Hollywood Bowl. He tore the roof off.

I'm also convinced that while dancing with hundreds or thousands of your closest friends is a powerful way to go, that's not required either. I don't see any reason we can't rock sitting perfectly still and alone, just like the Maxell Tape Guy.

The external trappings are certainly attractive to some, and I know I'm jonesing for some live music. I could use a good dance party like you wouldn't believe. But what we're really talking about is an internal state. A state that's available to all of us from time to time. If little old me can be a rock star every once in a while, you definitely can too.

Theo Von and Billy Strings on sobriety and psychedelics

Billy Strings is one of my favorite living guitarists. He's a rockstar, for sure. From what I know about him, he's a really sweet, thoughtful guy as well. In this podcast, he speaks with Theo Von, a comedian who is open about his sobriety. I almost didn't share this episode because it starts really dark. There are some really hard to listen to stories about crack, meth, & alcohol. (Trigger warning). But about 40 minutes in, it shifts. He suggests that many people would be better off just eating a mushroom and camping with their friends. He then relates his time with Bill Kreutzmann and 'The Grateful Dead Camp', who he claims are often wonderful, intelligent people who are childlike without being immature. Then he describes an encounter with a DMT Goddess who shows him how the universe works, and I was sold. The podcast is a wild ride. Enjoy.
