Welcome to this Week's Edition of Red Things on TuesdayHello, Friend! If you're new to the Tam Integration mailing list, Red Things on Tuesday is a glimpse into our journey. We're continually growing and exploring, just like you. This collection of books, music, teachings, psychedelic ephemera, and the like that we think is meaningful and have been enjoying. It gets sent out on most Tuesdays. The name is based on something a Vedic astrologer told Daniel (me!) once, making this a sadhana . We appreciate you participating in it. If you're interested in joining one of our integration circles, visit the website here or our Social Link Tree Here. Men's integration circle is now every Tuesday!Who is this inner healer anyway?Long before I ever heard of the popular psychedelic phrase "Inner Healing Intelligence," I knew of the concept. My craniosacral therapist told me that my body had a natural inclination towards health and balance, and he was just supporting that. Many of the yogis and meditators that I studied with would point to a wise inner self that was guiding me in ways big and small. Sometimes, they would refer to a great inner teacher or an inner guru who is not that different from this healer we talk about. It reminds me of a story about the great sage Ramana Maharshi. A spiritual aspirant came to Ramana, seeking his wisdom. He asked Ramana to be his guru. Ramana replied that the man should seek the guru within. "But I want you to be my guru!" The man complained. Ramana smiled his knowing smile, "OK, your outer guru is telling you to seek your inner guru" How do you argue with that? Ramana suggests that most of us need guidance to navigate the confusing labyrinth of our minds, but ultimately, it will be our own inner wisdom that will liberate us from our mental bondage, confusion, and suffering. Of course, among metaphysicians, there is debate about the true location and identity of this inner healer. Is it a function of our hardware, part of our physicality? That certainly seems to be the case when we talk about cuts, bruises, and broken bones. The body certainly seems to heal many issues easily. (Can you imagine if we had to literally fix ourselves every time we got a scratch or a fever?) But what about our psychological or even spiritual ailments? Can our drive towards wholeness also be attributed to our body or even our brain? Where does the mind come into play? To what extent is the inner healer a function of our brain or mind? Is it software? A subroutine that troubleshoots distress to create more peace and happiness? I tend to think of the inner healer as something more vast. Just my opinion. It may work through the body, mind, and brain, but I doubt this is the extent of it. It's more likely, in my mind, that the inner healer resides in a space that is beyond yet includes. A space akin to our idea of pure consciousness. A Consciousness that permeates all phenomena. An inner healer that is in us, but not just us; it's in all of us. My inner healer is not in any real way different from your inner healer. Like the yogis might say, "The Guru Presence". Many wisdom traditions have some kind of deity or elevated being dedicated to healing, like Dhanvantari or the Medicine Buddha. This powerful archetype is not limited to modern psychonauts. That's how I'm thinking about it. Right now, anyway. I'm open to it evolving. I got to think about it because I was reading this research paper about the role of the inner healer. It turns out that it's hard to prove the existence of a mystical doctor who appears when you ingest enough psilocybin. Who would have thought? What the paper does find is that people with depression who have the experience of an inner healer in their journeys often have a more pronounced reduction in their symptoms of depression. That's nice! I'm certainly not an expert on science or how research could or should be done. I'm trying to read more papers these days. I am finding myself enjoying them. I do feel like this study leaves a lot on the table, and there is a lot more to explore. I wouldn't mind seeing more along these lines. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/02698811241239206 In the meantime, I'm going to brew a cup of tea and offer it to my inner healer. It seems like if they are going to do all this heavy lifting for my mind, body, and soul, it's the least I can do. Integration sometimes looks like devotion to the unseen forces that guide us along the path. A Very Nice Dhanvantari MantraHe is said to be the source of Ayurvedic medicine.
